Dennis comes from a musical family. He began taking piano lessons at the age of 6. Raised in a small town,  he was in church every Sunday and began singing in the choir and harmonizing as much as possible. He began playing oboe in the 5th grade and switched over to saxophone in the 8th grade. At 17 he helped form a band called "Toccoa." This led to playing in several other local bands in the Savannah area while majoring in music at Armstrong State College. (Now Armstrong Atlantic University) His love for jazz grew while at college along with an awakening to songwriting.

Encouraged by his musical mentor and brother, Jimmy Maddox, he began writing and arranging songs in the early days of smooth jazz. He then started his own jazz band- The Dennis Maddox Quartet. Dennis honed his improvisational skills on the Tenor Sax and Piano playing tunes by Grover Washington Jr., The Crusaders, Spyrogyra, George Benson as well as the legends of jazz such as Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker.

In 1981, at the age of 23, he had a "Damascus Road" type experience where he realized that God was real and that life was empty and unfulfilling without Him. He began playing on the Worship team at a local church called " The Mustard Seed Faith Church.'" Getting back to his roots he began singing again and formed one of the first Contemporary Christian Bands in Savannah- "Second Wind." In 1987 he began focusing more on Praise & Worship and became Worship Pastor at what is now The Seed Church. He has written in-house songs for every occasion for over 3 decades. His passion is Worship through the vehicle of music. He leads worship every week on Piano and Guitar as well as soloing on saxophone.
